O'r Ddarllenfa

Y newyddion diweddaraf o Gadeirlan Deiniol Sant ym Mangor a Bro Deiniol

Carolau ar y Stryd Fawr

Mae cantorion ac offerynwyr o Gôr y Gadeirlan, ynghyd â ffrindiau eraill o’r Brifysgol, wedi bod yn canu carolau yn ystod y dydd ar y Stryd Fawr yn union i’r de o’r Gadeirlan. Yn ogystal â darparu tystiolaeth Gristnogol lawen, maen nhw hefyd wedi bod yn dosbarthu taflenni gyda manylion ein gwasanaethau Nadolig, ac yn codi arian ar gyfer ein Elusen Nadolig, sef gwaith Undeb y Mamau â goroeswyr cam-drin domestig.

Meseia

George Frideric Handel
Dydd Mawrth 14 Rhagfyr
7.30pm

Ymunwch â Chôr y Gadeirlan am berfformiad o Ran I a “hoff ddarnau” o oratorio enwocaf Handel, mewn fersiwn ddwyieithog newydd a chyffrous. Bydd y perfformiad yn cynnwys unawdau gan Ysgolheigion y Gân newydd y Gadeirlan, a chyfeiliant cerddorfaol gan fyfyrwyr Prifysgol Bangor a cherddorion lleol eraill. Mae tocynnau (£10 oedolion / £5 consesiynau / plant yn rhad ac am ddim) ar gael ar y drws neu ymlaen llaw yma.

Goleuni a Gobaith

Bu Defod y Goleuni, y cyntaf o’n tair defod draddodiadol, dirdynnol a cherddorol ar nos Sul dros gyfnod y Nadolig, yn gychwyn priodol i’r Adfent y Sul diwethaf am 5.30pm. Gwnewch eich gorau i fynychu, os y medrwch, y nesaf or defodau, sef Defod Gobaith, gan gynnwys Llithoedd a Charolau’r Nadolig, am 5.30pm ar 19 Rhagfyr.

Drws y De

Diolch i gryn dipyn o dacluso gan dîm y Gadeirlan, rydym wedi gallu ailagor Drws y De i’r Stryd Fawr. Tra bo’r blychau drafft pren yn parhau i gyflwyno rhai anawsterau, ac er bod angen rhoi sylw pellach i rai o’r bolltau drws hynafol, mae’n dda cael holl ddrysau’r Gadeirlan ar agor saith diwrnod yr wythnos.

Hosbis Dewi Sant

Anrhydedd oedd croesawu’r tîm o Hosbis Dewi Sant, ynghyd â Chadeirlan lawn o gefnogwyr, nos Wener ar gyfer eu cyngerdd Nadolig blynyddol. Cofiwch waith Hosbis Dewi Sant yn eich gweddïau.

Coeden Nadolig

Rydym yn ddiolchgar iawn i roddwr ein Coeden Nadolig wrth Ddrws y Gorllewin, a gyrhaeddodd yr wythnos ddiwethaf hon, ac i bawb a helpodd i’w chodi a’i haddurno â goleuadau ar gyfer yr Adfent.

Cabidwl y Gadeirlan

Cyfarfu Cabidwl y Gadeirlan (corff goruchwylio’r Gadeirlan) ddydd Mawrth diwethaf yn Nant Gwrtheyrn. Hwn oedd cyfarfod cyntaf y Cabidwl ar ei newydd wedd yn sgil sefydlu Canoniaid newydd ym mis Medi. Roedd yn dda i’r Cabidwl newydd gael rhywfaint o amser gweddigar a myfyriol i bwyso a mesur datblygiadau diweddar ym mywyd y Gadeirlan ac ystyried cynlluniau ar gyfer y dyfodol, gan gynnwys y cynlluniau ffabrig a drafodwyd yn y Cyfarfod Cynulleidfaol diwethaf. Roedd hefyd yn dda bod ein Cyfarwyddwr Cerdd a’n Gweinidog Teulu wedi medru cwrdd â’r Cabidwl. Gellir gweld rhestr o aelodau Cabidwl ar dudalen olaf Buchedd Bangor.

Sel!

Bu’r gwerthiant o anrhegion, cardiau, llyfrau a nwyddau eraill o siop y Gadeirlan yn boblogaidd. Rydym yn ddiolchgar i gydweithwyr sydd wedi gweithio’n galed i ddidoli stoc, ac i alluogi’r stondin i fod ar waith.

Gosber ar Gân ar ddydd Iau

Mae’n hyfryd gallu offrymu Gosber ar Gân bob nos Iau am 5.30pm. Cefnogwch y gwasanaeth rhyfeddol hwn gyda’ch presenoldeb. Mae’n wasanaeth arbennig o dda i wahodd ffrindiau a’r rhai sydd ar gyrion bywyd yr Eglwys i’w fynychu.

Byddwch yn Gorydd y Nadolig

Dydd Sadwrn 11 Rhagfyr
O 10am

Ar ddydd Sadwrn 11 Rhagfyr mae tîm cerdd y Gadeirlan yn cynnal diwrnod o weithdai a gweithgareddau i blant. Mae sesiwn y bore, 10 am-12.30pm, ar gyfer plant 6-8 oed, a sesiwn y prynhawn, 2pm-4.30pm, ar gyfer plant 9-12 oed. Bydd cyfle i ganu rhai o’ch hoff garolau Nadolig, i gymryd rhan mewn gweithgareddau, gemau a chrefft Nadoligaidd amrywiol, a chymryd rhan yn y gwaith o greu “cerdyn Nadolig rhithwir” i drigolion cartrefi gofal lleol. Mae’r sesiynau’n rhad ac am ddim, ac yn gyfle, efallai, i rieni gael ychydig o amser i siopa Nadolig! Dylai rhieni plant sydd â diddordeb gysylltu â’n Cyfarwyddwr Cerdd i archebu eu lle.

Rydym ni'n neilltuol o ddiolchgar i Aled Jones am anfon neges atom i hybu'r digwyddiad hwn ac i gefnogi gweinidogaeth gorawl y Gadeirlan,

Meddai Aled:

Fe wnes i fwynhau fy amser yn canu gyda Chôr Cadeirlan Deiniol Sant yn fawr; mae'r Gadeirlan bob amser wedi bod yn lle cyfeillgar a chroesawgar ac wedi rhoi llawer o atgofion melys i mi yr wyf yn eu trysori hyd heddiw.

Fe wnaeth bod yn rhan o Gôr Cadeirlan Deiniol Sant helpu i lansio fy ngyrfa ganu; roedd yn ffordd wych o gymryd fy nghamau cyntaf mewn cerddoriaeth a darganfod beth allwn i ei wneud.

Ond hoffwn ei argymell i unrhyw berson ifanc, p'un a oes gennych ddiddordeb mewn cerddoriaeth, neu ddim ond eisiau mwynhau gwneud rhywbeth hwyl ar ôl ysgol.

Mae canu mewn côr cadeirlan yn agor cymaint o ddrysau i chi ac yn wych ar gyfer adeiladu hunanhyder plant.

Rwyf wedi gweld cyd-aelodau swil yn cael gwefr go iawn o berfformio, ac yn dechrau mwynhau bod yn rhan o'r gwaith tîm pan fyddant yn sylweddoli pa mor bwysig yw cyfraniad pawb mewn côr.

Fe wnaeth hefyd ddysgu llwyth i mi am y byd y tu allan. Credwch neu beidio, mae hefyd yn helpu i gael eich pen rownd mathemateg, llenyddiaeth a gwybodaeth gyffredinol!

Nid yw’r pandemig wedi bod yn hawdd i Gôr Cadeirlan Deiniol Sant, a gwn fod angen iddo bellach recriwtio mwy o gantorion ifanc a rhoi’r un cyfleoedd iddynt ag a gefais.

Byddaf yn apelio ar blant a rhieni yng Ngwynedd ac Ynys Môn i ddod i ddarganfod mwy ar 11 Rhagfyr.

Rwy'n edrych ymlaen yn fawr at ddod yn ôl i Fangor ym mis Mawrth y flwyddyn nesaf fel rhan o fy nhaith Cadeirlannau 2022, a gweld sut mae'r côr yn dod yn ei flaen.

Diolch i Aled am ei gefnogaeth galonogol.

Y Côr ar y Stryd Fawr | The Choir on the High Street

Weekly notices

Carols on the High Street

Singers and instrumentalists from the Cathedral Choir, along with other friends from the University, have been singing carols during the day on the High Street immediately to the south of the Cathedral. As well as providing a cheerful Christian witness, they have also been handing out leaflets with details of our Christmas services, and fundraising for our Christmas Charity, the work of the Mothers’ Union for survivors of domestic abuse.

Messiah

George Frideric Handel
Tuesday 14 December
7.30pm

Join the Cathedral Choir for a performance of Part I and “favourite excerpts” from Handel’s most famous oratorio, in an exciting new bilingual version. The performance will feature solos from our brand-new Choral Scholars and orchestral accompaniment by Bangor University students and other local musicians. Tickets (£10 adults / £5 concessions / children free) are available on the door or in advance here.

Light and Hope

Our Ceremony of Light, the first of our traditional, atmospheric and musically-rich ceremonies on a Sunday evening during the Christmas period, took place last Sunday at 5.30pm. It was a beautiful beginning to Advent. Please put the date of our next such sevice, our Ceremony of Hope, in your diaries: Sunday 19 December at 7.30pm. This service will incorporate our traditional nine lessons and carols for Christmas.

South Door

Thanks to a good deal of decluttering by the Cathedral team, we have been able to re-open the Cathedral’s South Door onto the High Street. While the wooden draught boxes continue to present some difficulties, and while some of the ancient door bolts need some further attention, it is good to have all of the Cathedral’s doors open seven days a week.

Y Gadeirlan yn lliwiau Hosbis Dewi Sant | The Cathedral lit up in the colours of St David's Hospice

St David’s Hospice

It was good to welcome the team from St David’s Hospice, along with a full Cathedral of supporters, on Friday night for their annual Christmas concert. Please remember the work of St David’s Hospice in your prayers.

Christmas Tree

We are very grateful to the donor of our West Door Christmas Tree, which arrived this past week, and to all who helped to put her up and decked her with lights for Advent.

Cathedral Chapter

The Cathedral Chapter (the Cathedral’s oversight body) met this past Tuesday in Nant Gwrtheyrn. It was the first meeting of the larger Chapter body following September’s installation of new Canons. It was good for the new Chapter to have some prayerful and deliberative time to take stock of recent developments in the life of the Cathedral and to consider future plans, including the fabric plans discussed at the last Congregational Meeting. It was also good that our Director of Music and Family Minister were able to spend some time with the Chapter. A list of Chapter members can be found on the final page of Buchedd Bangor.

Sale!

The sale of gifts, cards, books and other Cathedral shop merchandise has proved very popular. We are grateful to colleagues who have worked hard to sort through stock, and to enable the stall to be in operation.

Choral Evensong on Thursday

It is a precious gift to be able to offer Choral Evensong bilingually every Thursday evening at 5.30pm. Please support this wonderful service with your presence. It’s a particular good service to which to invite friends and those on the margins of Church life.

Be a Christmas Chorister

Saturday 11 December
From 10am

On Saturday 11 December the Cathedral’s music team is hosting a day of workshops and activities for children. The morning session, 10am- 12.30pm, is for children aged 6-8, and the afternoon session, 2pm-4.30pm, for children aged 9-12. You will get the chance to sing some of your favourite Christmas tunes, take part in assorted festive craft, activities and games, and take part in the creation of a “virtual Christmas card” for residents of local care homes. Sessions are free and could give parents much-needed time to get a bit of Christmas shopping done! Parents of any interested children should contact our Director of Music to book their place.

We're especially grateful to Aled Jones for sending a message supporting Be a Christmas Chorister, and encouraging the choral ministry of the Cathedral.

Aled says:

I really enjoyed my time singing with Saint Deiniol's Cathedral Choir; the cathedral has always been a friendly and welcoming place and gave me many fond memories which I treasure to this day.

Being part of the Cathedral Choir helped launch my singing career; it was a great way to take my first steps in music and find out just what I could do.

But I’d recommend it to any young person, whether you’re interested in music, or just want to enjoy doing something fun after school.

Singing in a cathedral choir opens so many doors for you and is great for building children’s self- confidence.

I’ve seen shy colleagues get a real buzz from performing, and start to enjoy being part of the teamwork when they realise just how important everyone’s contribution is in a choir.

It also taught me loads about the world outside. Believe it or not, it also helps get your head round maths, literature and general knowledge!

The pandemic hasn’t been easy for Saint Deiniol's Cathedral Choir, and I know it now needs to recruit more young singers and give them the same opportunities as I had.

I’d appeal to children and parents in Gwynedd and Anglesey to come and find out more on 11th December.

I’m really looking forward to coming back to Bangor in March next year as part of my 2022 cathedral tour, and seeing how the choir are getting on.

Many thanks to Aled for his support.

Buchedd Bangor

The new magazine of Saint Deiniol’s Cathedral in Bangor

This first edition is a companion to the period from Advent Sunday (28 November) until the end of Christmastide on Candlemas Day (30 January). It offers a mixture of devotional material and practical knowledge about our life together.

Click on the image above to read a copy.

The intention is to publish five issues of Buchedd Bangor over the course of the year, each coinciding with a specific period in the Cathedral’s worshipping life, and complementing a series of Sunday morning sermons that will guide us through each period.

Pages 40-43 of Buchedd Bangor outline the rich and wonderful celebrations taking place at the Cathedral over Advent and Christmas, in addition to our regular observances and Christmas Eucharists.

These include a performance of the Messiah by the Choir on 14 December and our Christmas Lesson & Carols on 19 December. Please be sure to put these and other dates in your diaries.

Please also take copies away to give to others to introduce them to the life and buzz of the Cathedral.
