The latest news from Saint Deiniol's Cathedral in Bangor and the Ministry Area of Bro Deiniol
Place our Holy Week 2024 observances in your diary today
Our observance of Holy Week at Saint Deiniol’s Cathedral this year is accompanied by R. S. Thomas, a priest-poet of the Diocese of Bangor and one of the 20th century’s great religious writers.
As a steady beat to our Holy Week, a devotional observance rich in worship and music is offered at the Cathedral every evening at 6.00pm from Palm Sunday to Easter Eve. Distinguished poets and scholars will guide our devotions; and this year’s musical commission, premiered on the evening of Good Friday, is Alex Mills’s There Was a Garden – a choral setting of unpublished and previously unseen poems by R. S. Thomas drawn from his manuscripts held in the archive of the R. S. Thomas Study Centre at Bangor University.

Creeds, Councils and Controversies: A refresher on the Early Church
Wednesday 28 February
at 6.00pm
As part of our Wednesday events during Lent, and in connection to our Lent sermon series, we welcome Canon Robin Ward this coming Wednesday evening to deliver an online talk entitled Creeds, Councils and Controversies: A refresher on the Early Church. The talk will take us on a journey through the patristic period, and we will learn about the key theologians of this time, and even discover how chants sung by dockers in Alexandria led to the spread of heresies across the Roman Empire. There will be opportunities to ask questions and to discuss this fascinating and formational period in the history of the Church.
Our speaker, Canon Robin Ward, is the Principal of St Stephen’s House, an Anglican theological college in Oxford, attended by our Minor Canon. Canon Ward worked in parish ministry in London and Kent for 15 years, and obtained a Ph.D. from King’s College London. He is a member of the Faculty of Theology & Religion at the University of Oxford, and an honorary canon of Rochester Cathedral.

Monthly Requiem
Wednesday 13 March
at 5.30pm
March sees the introduction of our new monthly Wednesday evening Choral Eucharist of Requiem for the Departed. A Requiem Eucharist is a precious opportunity to pray for those whom we love but see no longer. At these monthly services we will pray by name for those who have died during the past month from our own community, and for those who funerals have taken place at the Cathedral recently. On 13 March at 5.30pm, Fauré’s setting of the Requiem will be sung.
Thursday Music Recitals
This week’s recital is given by Ella Leonard on the oboe, and features the Oboe Concerto by William Mathias.
